How To
How To Chair Service Projects
- Think of a project to do! There are many projects that Gamma does on a regular basis, and plenty of projects that need chairs. Feel free to take on a weekly project or just do a one-time deal. Think about the people you would like to work with – are you anxious to help children, animals, or the elderly? Do you like working outdoors? Try to think of a project you’ll be passionate about, the planning and work will be easier!
- Think of a location. Are you going to sell goodies in Mann Library, or rake leaves in downtown Ithaca? Are you going to a school to tutor or the Science Center to do demonstrations? If it’s on-campus, you may need to reserve a room, we’ll go over this in more detail later in the semester. If you need to know now, just ask a brother for help! If it’s off-campus you will need to think about transportation. How will you get there? Does this limit the number of people? Do you have a car, or do you need a driver? (Don’t forget about TCAT, mass transit is often the easiest way to get there)
- Drivers are always a hot commodity! Hopefully someone will volunteer, otherwise contact the VPS (Jocelyn Chacko cj254) for help securing a driver. There is a separate driver’s listserv to email. We would hate for a project not to happen because there isn’t transportation!
- If you are driving somewhere, have a meet-up location. It’s popular for Gamma Bros to meet in the WSH parking lot (behind the building) at least 30 min. before you need to actually be there.
- Decide on a time. Many projects suffer because they’re during class times. Projects work best in the afternoon/evening and the weekends. But don’t hesitate if it is during the day – brothers often have breaks in their schedule and sign up. Make sure the duration isn’t too long – if it’s more than 2 to 4 hrs, can it be split into shifts? This works well for tabling or working events for the community.
- If necessary, make a sign-up googledoc. This is an excel spreadsheet in the form of a googledoc that can be shared. We’ll go over googledocs in more detail in the future. The basic necessities are: Name, Net-ID, and what shift they’re signing up for. You should have the name of the project, date and time at the top of the document. It’s also helpful to have phone numbers of any drivers.
- Give all your information to the VPS (Jocelyn Chacko cj254) Again this is:
- What is it? Give it a title and describe the project
- Where? Location of project and/or where to meet beforehand
- When? Time, and any break-down of shifts
- Sign-up googledoc (make sure it can be seen and edited by everyone)
- Any other information brothers will need for your project to be successful (i.e. sneakers, warm clothes, etc)
- Put the event on the website (apoonline.org/gamma) as a service event.
- Send a reminder email to the brothers that signed up. Send this 48 to 24hrs prior to the project.
- Take attendance. You will need to report anyone who has broken the 72hr rule.
- Have fun!! Community service is awesome
- Last but not least, evaluate! Fill out this evaluation with care. It helps a lot to know exactly what went well or what didn’t. What could be improved for the future?
